As mentioned by me in my earlier letters too, the Krishnaraja Boulevard is one of the finest stretches in the city. This near 600 m stretch is adorned by many heritage structures, including the Law Courts and the Zilla Panchayat, on its sides. With wide footpaths on both the sides and hosting a beautiful row of trees on its wide median, the stretch used to present a majestic look. Unfortunately, of late, this stretch has been facing threats of destruction. The footpaths and the median have been often narrowed down and parts of its footpaths (which used to go green during the rainy season) have been unmindfully concreted and tiled. It is noticed that work towards paving the median — which had earlier been beautifully turfed with grass for a few years — is underway; unduly huge kerb-stones have been placed and huge amounts of gravel have been dumped all along. It can only be expected that the median will be concreted and paved with coloured tiles shortly, giving the road an awkward look and preventing totally the ground water recharge that used take place during rains, leading to a gradual death of the trees around. I request the authorities to stop vandalising of such beautiful roads and abandon all activities of development on this heritage stretch.
