Apropos the news item ‘Lights Out! CESC goes into power-saving mode’ (Star of Mysore dated Oct. 7), it clearly reflects the sheer lack of planning and execution by the authorities concerned, despite a hefty budget allocation of Rs. 6 crore for Dasara illumination.
The Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) took over a month to erect and install the lighting arrangements, creating a spectacular display during the Navaratri celebrations. Yet, barely days after Dasara, more than 80 percent of the illumination has been switched off.
Instead of stretching the illumination over 136 kms, the authorities could have limited the coverage area and extended the duration until Deepavali (Oct. 22).
Rather than concentrating illumination in the central business area, continuing to light up key entry roads such as Hunsur Road, Bengaluru Road, KRS Road, and Nanjangud Road would have drawn more visitors. This would not only have delighted residents but also boosted tourism revenue substantially.
During Navaratri, the Police deserve credit for maintaining excellent traffic discipline. Sadly, post-Dasara, their absence is sorely felt. With barricades removed from Sayyaji Rao Road, traffic movement has become chaotic — vehicles enter and exit from all by-lanes, leading to gridlocks and confusion.
Once again, our Government machinery has managed to disappoint the public, Dasara after Dasara!
