mysore university’s finances,

Sir,

As a citizen of Namma Mysuru, I feel it is my duty to inform you — if you are not already aware — that Mysore University’s finances and reputation are in dire straits.

The latest confirmed news indicates that pension payments for nearly 1,900 retired academics and administrative staff have been delayed this month, pending a Government bailout to rescue the University.

The prestigious University has been receiving a spate of negative press, with its spokespersons making honest, on-the-record statements about the closure of certain departments and the cessation of some examinations.

This candour is commendable, as no attempts are being made to whitewash or conceal the harsh reality.

However, it deeply pains me to see such a grand institution — one that has produced stalwarts like Sociologist M.N. Srinivas and Economist Dr. V.K.R.V. Rao (the driving force behind the Central Institute of Indian Languages) — falling from grace.

I sincerely hope my fears are misplaced and that this is merely a temporary phase which the century-old Varsity will tide over gracefully.
