A majority of city roads have been divided by providing medians. These medians, instead of helping in smooth flow of traffic, have become a nuisance. Take the case of Sahukar Chennaiah Road leading towards Maruthi Temple in Kuvempunagar. This wide road was good enough to take care of the density of traffic throughout the day. After constructing the median, the road space is reduced. In addition, parking of vehicles starts from the beginning of the road near an optical store and continues further, despite a ‘No Parking’ board. Naturally, this will reduce the space for road-users. On the other side of the road there is an educational institution. Students and others take the short-cut by going on the wrong side of the road, instead of taking U-turn at the traffic signal. Vegetable vendors and food carts add to the misery of road-users. Has this median served any purpose? The answer is an absolute No. There is an immediate need for an opening opposite Saraswathipuram Police Station which will help students and other road users, either to enter their institution or proceed towards Vishwamanava Double Road or towards Kuvempunagar. Unfortunately, at the construction stage, it appears, no proper assessment was done taking into consideration the institutions and other public places on either side of the road, where movement of people are more. It is time the authorities concerned look into this problem and arrange an opening opposite Jnanodaya PU College and Saraswathipuram Police Station as early as possible.
