This refers to the news item titled “Aadhaar to be must for IT returns” in a national daily recently. The PAN numbers of assessees do not match in most cases with the Data Base of the IT Department. With great difficulty one has to find out the name as per the IT data base and upload the Return of Income and not just based on the PAN Card held. The issue of verifying the return with Aadhaar number has been there last 2 years and in majority of cases the name does not match and assessees have not been able to verify using the same. Hence if this is made mandatory from July 1, no one can file the Return for AY 2017-18 within the due dates. I request the Finance Ministry to reconsider and understand the practical issues involved and make it mandatory for new applicants for PAN cards to link Aadhaar. For existing PAN Card holders some method has to be found to link the two sans hassles.
