do we need kambala in mysuru d

Sir,

Kambala is a Malenaadu, Karavali regional sport of Karnataka. It suits the surroundings of those regions and the culture in its own seasonal setup. There is no doubt that people of Mysuru will gather in big numbers just like they do at most of the Dasara attractions, for this event as well, out of sheer curiosity.

But it is not a sport that will fit our urban landscape and atmosphere. It is not like showcasing Yakshagana or Taalamaddale art forms of the coastal districts in the Mysuru auditoria.

It is not only an increased tension and violence inflicted on poor animals, but it is also taking a toll on plants and trees, as I hear they are being cleared to create a track field for Kambala. They are also going to consume wet fields and precious water, while our local Ministers are expected to tackle the expected drought.

It may be too little and too late to write this letter to the media that will probably fall on the deaf ears of the authorities, if at all.

I hope the Dasara festival leans towards maintaining the local, traditional flavours and colours, while adding extraneous cultures and attractions after consciously made decisions.
