Sir, I travelled to and fro from Hassan, on an official work in company’s car driven by one of the experienced officers, on Saturday, the 24th and Sunday, the 25th of February. I noticed that the distance between Mysuru and Hassan was about 120 kms and with not much of traffic on this road and a good vehicle like Duster, I thought that the journey would be as pleasant as, if not better than, the journey between Mysuru and Bengaluru, which is about 140 kms and on which road, I frequently travel by road in car. Alas! It was not to be, what with innumerable road humps, many of them unscientifically laid and perhaps many of them had been laid because there were some kacha roads leading from some village to the main road ! After reaching Hassan, albeit arduously, I noticed that the vehicle mileage had drastically dropped and the explanation given by the, well-informed and experienced official who was at the wheels on this occasion, was that necessitating change of gear at every hump and consequent change of speed, were responsible for the drop in mileage apart from the fact that it had taken longer than required time. I would therefore recommend to the authorities concerned to take out all the humps on the main road and lay them, twice the number, if required, on the side roads. This would also reduce the pollution being created by vehicles because of the humps on the main road, apart from saving cost and time taken for the journey between the two cities.
