Sir, In these days of government creating awareness among consumers regarding their rights to demand proper service, it was heartening to see that the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum (CDRF), Mysuru, rose to the occasion and imposed penalty on a builder for delay in delivery of the possession of the apartment of a friend of mine, by nearly 18 months. It not only asked the builder to pay damages for delay in delivery but for compensation in deficiency of service. The consumer had alleged that upon taking possession, he found shoddy construction such as cracked walls and leaking ceilings, as well as lack of some of the promised amenities such as separate exit gate.  My friend had filed a case with the CDRF, Mysuru, seeking damages. Once the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act (RERA) that is effective from May 1, 2017 is also implemented in Karnataka, then I think more and more people can fight for their rights especially when it comes to real estate. RERA aims to protect the interest of consumers, promote fair play in real estate transactions and ensure timely execution of projects.
