Mysuru: Sigma Hospital, Nursing College and Vishwashanthi Institution celebrated International Day of Yoga (IDY) in city yesterday, with an objective of promoting a disease-free and healthy life.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Siddalingeshwar stated that the significance of yoga has been passed down through the ages from ancient sages and is rooted in the civilisations of Harappa, Mohenjo-Daro, Indus Valley, the ancient Sanatana Hindu tradition and the teachings of the sage Charaka.

He explained that great personalities such as Sri Aurobindo, Maharshi Patanjali, Jaggi Vasudev and Sri Ravi Shankar Guruji have given renewed importance to yoga and popularised it in the present century.

Managing Director of Sigma Hospital S. Gnanashankar said that the hospital has been observing Yoga Day every year since its inception to encourage Mysureans to lead disease-free lives and enjoy longevity and added that through the participation of doctors, hospital staff and students, the hospital has been symbolically conducting yoga sessions to inspire people to lead happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives.

Physician Dr. Rakesh Rajee Aras stated that regular yoga plays a vital role in the prevention and management of diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic health conditions.

Gastroenterologist Dr. Krishna explained that yoga is not limited to physical postures alone. It also includes breath control, meditation, concentration and maintaining harmony between the body and mind. Yoga is especially beneficial for digestive disorders, bloating, gas formation, sleep-related problems and various gastrointestinal ailments, he added.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks.
