Mysuru: Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, who is also the Chairman of District Child Protection Unit, has urged to maintain vigil over the possibilities of child marriages, that are more during Basava Jayanti and Akshaya Tritiya, being celebrated tomorrow (Apr. 30).
DC Lakshmikanth Reddy, in a press release has stated that, child marriage which is in practice since ancient days, is a worst ever practice that is being followed in the 21st century. The parents and relatives of the girl aged below 18 years, who fix the matrimonial alliance and organise the marriage, are liable for punishment under Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 (PCMA), that was amended in the year 2016 and came into effect in 2017. The adult bridegroom and his parents will also be treated as guilty in the case and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment not less than for a one-year term and extended up to 2 years or imposed a fine of Rs. 1 lakh or have to serve both imprisonment and pay the fine amount.
