Mysore/Mysuru: Dr. S.L. Ravindra, Statistical Officer of the Food Safety and Drug Administration (FSDA) Department in Mysuru district, has issued a stern warning to food manufacturers against the use of tartrazine, a banned artificial colour, in the preparation of spicy mixtures.
Despite previous advisories, Dr. Ravindra revealed that the illegal practice persists. “If 10 samples are collected, traces of the banned chemical are found in one or two,” he stated.
To deter violators, the Department has already initiated legal proceedings.
“Cases have been filed against some of the food makers, which are now under Court trial,” Dr. Ravindra added, emphasising that stringent action will be taken against offenders within the full ambit of the law.
As a safe and natural alternative, Dr. Ravindra clarified that manufacturers should use turmeric for colouring, which has a minimal effect on consumer health.
To educate and encourage compliance, the Department will conduct a workshop for sweet and spicy food makers. The session will focus on the ill-effects of hazardous chemicals like tartrazine and promote the adoption of safer alternatives.
What is tartrazine?
Tartrazine, also known as FD&C Yellow #5 or E102, is a synthetic lemon-yellow azo dye. It is a water-soluble chemical used as a colouring agent in processed foods, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
While it provides a rich colour, it is known to cause adverse health effects, including behavioural issues in children, organ damage, skin rashes, hives and asthma.
