Srirangapatna: The ashes of popular playback singer S. Janaki, who passed away on July 11 in the city, was immersed in River Cauvery at Ghosai Ghat here yesterday.

Janaki’s granddaughter Apsara, accompanied by family members, performed the rituals, under the supervision of priest Ramesh Sharma, as per Telugu Brahmin tradition.

Naveen, who was the caretaker of Janaki in Mysuru, said: “It was also the wish of Janaki, to immerse her ashes in Cauvery, where the ashes of her son Murali Krishna, who had passed away in January this year, was immersed.”

On the occasion, Naveen dismissed the rumours over inheriting the properties of Janaki, as a rumour.

“We had not confined Amma (as Janaki was addressed in reverence by those sharing a bond with her), to any house arrest. However, we are committed to build a Memorial for her in Mysuru city. Besides, a memorandum has been submitted to the State Government to name Bogadi-Gaddige Road after Janaki,” said Naveen, in whose farm house, the singer’s mortal remains was cremated on Sunday (July 12).

He (Naveen) thanked the State Government, District Administration and the public, for the cooperation extended, during the funeral, followed by immersion of Janaki’s ashes.
