The Department of Food and Civil Supplies has come to know that several families with annual income above Rs. 1.2 lakh have obtained Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards by providing false informations. Tax-payers, Central and State Government Employees and economically sound people should return the BPL cards, if any, before Dec. 31 to the taluk office or local ration office.
Who should return BPL cards: Employees of Government, Quasi Government Organisation, Boards and Corporations; people paying income tax, service tax and profession tax, Families owning 3 hectares of land (dry) or equivalent wet land in rural areas and houses above 1,000 sq.ft in urban areas. Owners of four wheelers other than transport vehicles to eke out a living if the government identifies an unauthorised BPL card, the card holder would be made to pay twice the present rate of food grains purchased so far and legal action would be initiated, according to a press release.
