Nanjangud, Oct. 31- An octogenarian visually challenged woman was allegedly assaulted by the lineman and Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) of Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) Ltd., over the pending electricity bill. The woman shared her ordeal while being treated at a hospital, the video of which has gone viral on social media.
Mahadevamma, aged 85 years and resident of Chikka Homma village in Nanjangud taluk is that woman. Mahadevamma, who stays alone at her home, is a beneficiary of Bhagya Jyoti scheme, under which, she has got a free electricity connection. However, her grandson had allegedly diverted the power supply to his house illegally. Following which, she had received an electricity bill for Rs. 5,000.
When CESC personnel went to her house to disconnect power, insisting the latter to pay the bill, she pleaded with them, allegedly to face the wrath of the CESC staff. She was later treated at Chamarajanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) Hospital, where she shared her agony, the video record of which has moved many on social media.
AEE clarifies
AEE Kiran Kumar, who is facing the charges of assault, outrightly rejected the charges made against him. He clarified that Mahadevamma’s grandson has drawn illegal power connection from her house, by installing a meter without a number.
“I also visited the village, during which Mahadevamma has said she wasn’t assaulted, but sought time to clear the bill. Despite this, the power supply was stated to be cut. But, the power supply to her house has been restored,” clarified Kiran Kumar.
