Mysuru: Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a highly specialised branch of dentistry in India. Although it has been practiced in various forms since 500 B.C, it was popularised in India by Dr. M.S.N Ginwalla and his colleagues in 1969 by the formation of Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons of India (AOMSI). To acknowledge the contribution of this specialty, the AOMSI celebrates Feb. 13 as ‘Oral and Maxilofacial Surgeons Day.’ Maxillofacial Surgery is a unique speciality that deals with treatment of many diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of oral (mouth) and maxillofacial (jaws and face) region. These facilities are available at JSS Dental College and Hospital, Mysuru.
