Mysuru’s Prof. R. Satyanarayana among nine Padma Awardees from State

Mysuru: City’s Musicologist Prof. R. Satyanarayana, who has carved a niche for himself in music, dance, Physics and Archaeology, is among the nine Padma awardees from the State. He has been conferred the Padma Shri in the Music category. He has served as Professor of Physics in Sarada Vilas College. The other seven, who have been chosen for Padma Shri from the State include R.N. Thyagarajan and R. N. Tharanathan, popularly known as Rudrapatnam Brothers; Sufi Singer from Bagalkot Ibraham Sutar in Music category; writer and film lyricist Doddarange Gowda (Lyrics); Seethavva Jodatti from Belagavi (Social Work), Midwife from Tumakaru Sulagithi Narasamma (Social Work) and Sri Siddeshwara Swamiji (Spiritualism). Rudrapatnam Brothers, native of Rudrapatnam in Hassan District, are well-established names in Karnatak music. They have conducted more than 2,500 concerts in the past 60 years. Midwife Narasamma, 97, who has been hospitalised because of age-related issues, has had no formal education and has assisted in conducting 15,000 deliveries. Seethavva Jodatti, a native of Kabbur village in Belagavi district, is instrumental in setting up more than 300 self-help groups for financial empowerment of oppressed classes. Cueist Pankaj Advani, also from Karnataka, has been conferred Padma Bushan, the third highest civilian award.
