Mysore/Mysuru: As part of International Museum Day celebrations, a special ‘Museum Tour’ titled ‘Museums on Wheels’ was organised for specially-abled children this morning.

The tour began from Wellington House on Irwin Road and covered the Payana Car Museum, Regional Museum of Natural History (RMNH) and the Railway Museum.

The programme was organised by the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya (IGRMS), Southern Regional Centre (SRC), Mysuru, in association with the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage.

Speaking after inaugurating the programme, A. Devaraju, Commissioner of the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, stressed the importance of preserving historical relics and fossils in a systematic manner.

“Museums are a boon for preserving history. Europeans not only introduced the concept of museums but also played a major role in documenting and conserving history through such institutions. Youngsters should take an interest in preserving historical heritage,” he said.

V. Ashok Vardhan, Officer-in-Charge of IGRMS-SRC, Mysuru, said historical documents and relics discovered anywhere should be immediately brought to the notice of the Archaeology Department instead of being ignored.

“Such findings can throw new light on the country’s history. Historical records should never be neglected,” he said. Highlighting the significance of museums, he said they serve as important links connecting people to the culture and history of their regions and countries.

International Museum Day is observed on May 18 to create awareness about the role of museums in preserving and promoting history and culture, he added.
