Srirangapatna: A woman, who had gone to the canal to wash clothes, has been allegedly murdered by miscreants, who have decamped with gold ornaments she was wearing.

The incident took place near the Varuna Canal, near a resort at Palahalli in the taluk.

The deceased woman has been identified as Mamatha (35), wife of Jagadish and a resident of Palahalli.

Yesterday at about 2 pm, Mamatha went to the canal to wash clothes and her body was found near the canal at about 3.30 pm.

A gold chain, gold mangalya chain and gold earrings are missing and Police have suspected that miscreants may have killed her for gold.

Srirangapatna Town Police, who have registered a case, are investigating.
