-  As per the Food Safety and Standards Act, all shops selling food items should compulsorily posses a licence. The Act covers all manufacturers of food items, packers, whole-sale distributors, hotels, bakeries, sweet stalls, bars/wine stores, canteen, clubs/caterers, reprocessing units, cold storages, street vendors, dhabas and  packaged drinking water suppliers.  Licence is mandatory for establishments with an annual turnover of Rs. 12 lakh and registration for those with less than Rs. 12 lakh. The violators will invite a fine of Rs. 5 lakh and sentence for 6 months.
