Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered judicial probe into the Karur stampede incident that occurred yesterday in which 39 were killed and more than 70 people were injured. The incident occurred when Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) Chief and actor Vijay was holding a public rally.
CM Stalin and Dy.CM Udayanidhi Stalin visited the hospital and enquired about health condition of those being treated at hospital.
Speaking to mediapersons later, Stalin said actions would be based on findings of inquiry commission headed by former High Court Justice Aruna Jagadeesan.
Meanwhile, the Karur Town Police have registered a case against several people, including Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) West District Secretary Mathiyalagan, General Secretary N. Anand, Joint General Secretary Nirmal Kumar, Karur West District Secretary V.P. Mathiyazhagan and others under Sections 109,110,125b, 223 of BNS.
Tamil Nadu Health Secretary, P. Senthil Kumar, said, “39 deaths have been reported. 17 women, 13 men, 4 male children and 5 female children have lost their lives. Postmortem has been done for 30 out of 39 deceased and bodies have been handed over to the families. The remaining postmortems are going on. While 26 injured persons were treated in the OPD and were discharged, 67 injured have been admitted to the Inpatient Department and are undergoing treatment. Two among them are critical, while all others are stable. One of the injured is being shifted to Madurai Medical College and Hospital for further treatment.”
Following the incident, the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K Stalin announced a compensation of Rs. 10 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs. One lakh each for the injured. Meanwhile, TVK chief Vijay also announced Rs. 20 lakh compensation each for the families of the deceased and Rs. 2 lakh each for the injured.
TVK Party moves Madras High Court
Meanwhile, the TVK party moved Madras High Court seeking a suo motu cognisance into the stampede alleging conspiracy. Justice M. Dhandapani accepted the urgent motion and is likely to be taken up tomorrow at the Madurai Bench of the High Court. The party is seeking a suo motu probe or a probe by an independent agency.
