Mysore/Mysuru: Bandipur and Nagarahole — two of South India’s premier wildlife sanctuaries and renowned tiger reserves — remain among the most sought-after destinations for tourists from across India and abroad. Every day, thousands of visitors arrive to experience forests and take part in safari rides.
With safari operations currently suspended, Mysuru District Hotel Owners’ Association President C. Narayanagowda has urged the State Government to intervene immediately and restart services, warning that the halt has triggered widespread economic distress.
The suspension has left countless tourists disappointed. For visitors to Mysuru, Bandipur and Nagarahole are considered must-see attractions, alongside the Palace, Zoo and Chamundi Hill. These destinations not only showcase the region’s rich wildlife heritage but also serve as critical drivers of the local economy, he noted.
The livelihoods of thousands of families depend directly on safari-related activity. When safaris stop, they lose their primary source of income. The region’s tourism sector has seen investments worth crores of rupees, with hotels and resorts established specifically to cater to safari-bound travellers.
Many hoteliers, who have taken substantial bank loans to set up and maintain their resorts, are now facing severe financial pressure as bookings are cancelled. Travel agents, vehicle drivers and licensed tourist guides are also bearing the brunt, creating a ripple effect across the entire tourism ecosystem, he said.
He pointed out that safaris have long been conducted with all necessary precautions and that no accidents have been reported thus far.
If required, he said, a fresh Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) can be introduced to strengthen safety protocols while ensuring that safari operations continue without disruption.
