Mysuru: Observing that classical music may be a thing of the past in a few decades, Air Deccan Founder Capt. G.R. Gopinath has regretted that the present education system and modernity are eclipsing our art and culture. He was speaking after inaugurating the five-day 24th Sangeetha Sammelana-2017 organised under the aegis of JSS Sangeetha Sabha Trust at Navajyoti auditorium, JSS Women’s College, Saraswathipuram here yesterday. Pointing out that the younger generation, which is in the grip of WhatsApp, Facebook and social networking sites, is losing interest in music and culture, Capt. Gopinath opined that Arts is facing a severe crisis today. Noting that hardwork, dedication and sincerity along with talent, holds key for success in any chosen field, he opined that students should develop love towards Art and Culture. The Sammelana President Vid. Dr. S. Vijayaraghavan, in his address, said that most of the times even talented musicians cannot make music as their livelihood. Pointing out that many musicians who have made music their profession, faced difficult times, he stressed on the need for the authorities to come to the rescue of musicians, with music losing sheen amongst the present generation. Calling for saving art by granting facilities such as employment and remuneration to artistes, he opined that private TV channels should provide a platform to artistes and give importance to classical music. Well-known musicologist Prof. Mysore V. Subramanya was conferred the title ‘Sangeetha Seva Nidhi’, while three achievers G. Vidyashankara, an art patron of Tumakuru, Vid. M.R. Manjuath of the city and Vidu. C.S. Ramamani of K.R. Nagar were felicitated on the occasion. Earlier, the Sammelana President Vid. Dr. S. Vijayaraghavan was brought in a procession from Saraswathipuram Fire Station junction to the venue. Suttur Mutt Seer Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swamiji graced the occasion. JSS Sangeetha Sabha Trust President K.V. Murthy presided over the inaugural. Today at 5 pm, flute recital by Vid. N. Rajakamal and at 7 pm, vocal recital by Vid. Shertailya Ranganatha Sharma.
