Mysuru: Egg prices in city have remained at Rs. 6 and 7 though there is a 25 percent drop in its prices. Retails outlets across the city except for some pockets near wholesale markets at Boti Bazaar and Mandi Mohalla, eggs are sold at Rs. 6 and 7 per piece. A communication from the of National Egg Co-Ordination Committee says that though the prices have come down to Rs. 5 per egg, retailers are selling the same for Rs. 6 and 7 due to middlemen. Egg prices at the retail level escalate during November and January every year. This year, the price hike started before time due to early onset of winter. This year, the spike in egg prices is largely being attributed to the rise in prices of vegetables such as beans, cauliflower, cabbage, brinjal, etc. and also due to drastic rise in the cost of poultry feeds. Also, egg prices have increased significantly as many poultry farms have reduced production for the current year because they did not get better rates last year. Speaking to Star of Mysore this morning, Shesha Narayana, Sales Promotion Officer, National Egg Co-Ordination Committee said that middlemen are pocketing huge commission as they are not passing on the benefits to the end-consumer and that is the reason eggs being sold at Rs. 6 and 7 in Mysuru. “Prices are down by 25 percent and the wholesale rates now stand at Rs. 435 per 100 eggs and this price includes traders’ commission. If you buy eggs from Boti Bazaar and wholesale markets in Mandi Mohalla, they will cost you Rs. 5 per egg. It is still cheaper if eggs are bought from poultry farms,” he said.
